Two reasons
1.it is clear that mercury does not form any kind of alloy with Iron i.e. amalgam ( the alloy of mercury with any metal is called amalgam)
2. if it is kept in glass then the bottle will not hold a sufficient amount of mercury if we

put more mercury in the Glass bottle then it will break because the density of Mercury is much higher than that of glass .
